More Fruit, More Fibre, Better Habits: Why We’re Excited About The School Dinner Shake-Up
School dinners are set for a big change.
From September 2027, new school food standards are expected to come into force in England, with the aim of improving children’s diets and helping schools serve healthier meals across the day. The updated standards are set to include more focus on fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, pulses and healthier drinks, with tighter limits on foods high in fat, sugar and salt.
At Get Fruity, we’re really happy to see the conversation moving in this direction.
We’ve always believed that healthy eating should feel simple, colourful and enjoyable. It should not feel like a punishment, a lecture or something boring. The earlier children are introduced to fresh food, fruit, fibre and balanced choices, the more normal it becomes.
Why this matters
The new guidance is expected to reduce things like deep-fried foods, high-sugar options, chocolate spreads, sugary drinks and overly processed choices, while encouraging schools to include more wholegrains, pulses, fruit and vegetables. Schools are also expected to offer more fibre-rich options such as wholewheat pasta, lentils and chickpeas.
For us, that feels like a positive step.
Not because every meal has to be perfect, but because small daily habits matter. A better breakfast, more fruit, more fibre, more water and more balanced meals can all play a part in helping young people feel better fuelled throughout the day.
More fruity, more fibre
We’d love to see schools making fruit and fibre feel exciting, not like an afterthought.
That could mean more fresh fruit options, colourful bowls, yoghurt with fruit, wholegrain bases, smoothies, healthier snacks and simple grab-and-go choices that children actually want to eat.
Because when healthier options look good, taste good and feel easy, people are much more likely to choose them.
That’s a big part of what we try to do at Get Fruity. Whether it’s smoothies, açai bowls, juices, protein shakes or wellness shots, our aim is to make healthier choices feel fun, fresh and accessible.
Healthy eating should feel normal
One of the biggest wins would be making healthy food feel like part of everyday life.
Not a trend.
Not a restriction.
Not something you only think about after a bad week.
Just normal, easy, feel-good food that helps build better routines.
The updated school standards are a reminder that food education and access to better options really does matter. If children grow up seeing fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and balanced meals as part of their daily routine, that can only be a good thing.
Our take
We’re hoping this shift brings more colour, more freshness and a little more fruitiness into school meals.
More fibre.
More real food.
More balanced choices.
More energy around healthy eating.
At Get Fruity, we’re all for anything that helps make healthier habits feel easier, especially for the next generation.
Healthy body, healthy mind 🧡
